The Andrew Goodman Foundation Condemns President Trump’s Racist Remarks

Last night, President Trump led a “send her back” chant, directed at Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, at a rally in Greenville, NC. This display follows an already turbulent week of President Trump’s racist and xenophobic attacks on Rep. Omar and three other junior members of Congress, all women of color and all American citizens.

Regardless of your political views, this ugly demonstration of hate and division should trouble all of us. Let’s not confuse our American freedom of expression as the right to threaten racial, ethnic, or religious groups. As a country built by immigrants, which guarantees everyone the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, President Trump’s rhetoric must be called out, condemned, and confronted. His remarks do not reflect our country’s true democratic values, which honor the human dignity and voices of all of us.

The Andrew Goodman Foundation exists to live the legacy of Andrew Goodman, a 20-year-old college student who lost his life confronting racism and defending the voting rights of his fellow Americans. That’s why we renounce The White House’s divisive rhetoric and recommit ourselves to promoting the values of fairness, compassion, pluralism, and an inclusive democracy.

Join us in telling President Trump that his statements, grounded in white nationalism, are un-American and have no place in our democracy.
